BHARATHANATYAM

Bharathanatyam is one of the oldest dance forms nurtured in the temples and courts of southern India since ancient times. It was later codified and documented as a performing art in the 19th century by four brothers known as the Tanjore Quartet whose musical compositions for dance form the bulk of the Bharathanatyam repertoire even today. The art was handed down through the generations as a living tradition under the Devadasi system in which women were dedicated to temples to serve the deity as dancers and musicians. These artists and male gurus were the sole repository of the art until the early 20th century when a renewed interest in Indiaís cultural heritage prompted many other communities to discover its beauty. The revival of Bharathanatyam brought the dance out of the temple precincts and onto the proscenium stage while still retaining its devotional character.

Today Bharathanatyam is one of the most popular and widely performed dance styles and is practised by male and female dancers all over India. Its wide range of movements, postures and the balanced mÈlange of rhythms and the mimetic, lends itself well to experimental and fusion choreography.

Apsaras Arts performs Bharathanatyam in the Kalakshetra tradition in which its founders Neila and S. Sathyalingam were trained under the direct tutelage of Rukmani Devi Arundale. Solo dance performances consisting of the typical Maargam (repertoire) which includes Alaarippu to Thillan, group presentations of the Maargam, thematic presentations and comprehensive dance theatre productions are some of the types of dance performances that are presented by Apsaras Arts in the Bharathanatyam style.
